What is the minimum alcohol concentration that must be present in the hand disinfectant gel to be effective against Covid-19?

To be effective, the hand gel must contain more than 60% alcohol. Some hand cleaning gel disinfectants are considered to be cosmetics and therefore the alcohol concentration is not reported. These products are not suitable for efficient protection against Covid-19.

When it is important to use hand gel disinfectant

Use is recommended in a variety of everyday contexts, particularly when away from home. The gel is useful in any occasion when using public transport (from the metro to trains) and crowded public and/or work environments. In general it is valuable in those contexts where close contact with others is expected. An essential requirement is that your hands are dry.  
The alcoholic component of the disinfectant acts on microbes and kills most of them. A limited amount of gel is sufficient to achieve a good level of hygiene, provided the alcohol concentration is adequate. The hands must be rubbed for a period of time of about 30/40 seconds, performing the operations that are normally followed when traditional soap is used. 
Regarding the duration of the effects of the hand disinfectant gel, there is no universal parameter. The environmental conditions and what kind of contacts you have must be considered. As a general criterion, experts advise against too frequent applications, as the alcoholic elements of the solution can have negative effects on the skin. 
There are also situations in which hand disinfectant gel is not appropriate. It is not designed to clean dirty hands or to remove any chemicals.

The procedures for the application of disinfectant hand gel

In sanitising hands it is a mistake to neglect the various operations to be carried out. As already mentioned, procedures similar to those used for washing with soap should be adopted. A small amount of gel on the palm is sufficient. 
The hands should be massaged with each other, distributing the gel on both the back and the palm. Care must be taken to involve the nails and the space between the fingers. It is preferable to perform the procedure without rings and bracelets. 
It is clear that versatility is one of the main prerogatives: the gel can be used in any context because it does not require water, it provides very short drying times and the effects are immediate. 

Why alcohol is effective 

Alcohol has the ability to kill various forms of microbes and among these are viruses and bacteria. In fact, it is able to inactivate their proteins through a particular process called denaturation. 
However, it does not demonstrate the same effectiveness on every microbe, on some it is more incisive on others less so. As a requirement, on the basis of sector analyses and as already clarified, a concentration of at least 60% is still required. 

Do homemade disinfectants work? 

Despite the proliferation of guides and tutorials, the homemade hand disinfectant gel is unfortunately not effective. To really reduce the risk of coming into contact with infectious agents, it is preferable to use quality products, made using tested formulas, such as those that make up our offer. Correct preservation preserves the effectiveness of the gel for over a year.
